We’re one option, never your only one
Working with us online sits happily alongside the services in your own country, and we’d always encourage you to use both. Here’s a rough guide to getting started locally too. Things change, so do check your local service for how it works right now.
United Kingdom NHS (free)
How to start: Have a word with your GP or health visitor about a referral to NHS speech & language therapy or paediatrics — and in a lot of areas you can now refer yourself straight to the SLT service.
For extra help at school, ask your local authority about an EHC needs assessment (EHCP), or start with the school’s SENCo.
Ireland HSE (publicly funded)
How to start: Start with your GP or Public Health Nurse, or get in touch with your local HSE Primary Care team or Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT). You’re also entitled to request an Assessment of Need.
School support is coordinated through the NCSE — ask your child’s school about it.
United States Early Intervention & IDEA
How to start: Under 3? Contact your state’s free Early Intervention program (IDEA Part C). Age 3 and over, ask your school district for a free evaluation. Your pediatrician can refer you, and a good many services are covered by insurance.
A district evaluation can lead to an IEP or a 504 plan for support at school.
Canada Provincial health & school boards
How to start: Support runs province by province — often publicly funded, though waitlists are pretty common. Begin with your family doctor or your child’s school, and ask what early-childhood and school-based services your province offers.
School boards provide learning support; ask about an assessment and a support plan (IEP).
Australia Medicare & NDIS
How to start: See your GP about a referral — a Chronic Disease Management or Mental Health plan can put some of the cost of allied-health sessions on Medicare. And for eligible children, the NDIS funds therapy and support.
Schools provide learning-support and can help you access an assessment.
New Zealand Ministry of Education & health
How to start: Have a chat with your GP, your Plunket nurse, or your child’s early-childhood centre or school. The Ministry of Education is the one that provides early-intervention and learning support.
Ask your school or ECE about learning support and referral to specialist services.
Somewhere else in the world? Have a word with your child’s doctor or paediatrician, ask what early-childhood or school-based support exists near you, or search “child speech & language therapist near me”. If your child is ever in danger, call your local emergency number.
