ABA or Speech Therapy: Which Does My Child Need?
Written by the Inclusive Developmental and Therapy Center therapy team — our Speech & Language Therapist, psychology and ABA staff. Clinical reviewer for this site: Dr Muhammad Suffyan, MB BS (GMC 8023727) · Updated August 2026; this page has changed since our last clinical review.
Most Pakistani autism centres put ABA at the top of the homepage. eMind in Multan, BASES (including their Multan branch), SPARK, PCA, ACRO, Orion — the menu is ABA, then speech, then OT, then physio. Directories do the same. Parents arrive asking for “ABA hours” before anyone has asked whether the child can request a drink.
ABA and speech therapy are different jobs. Sometimes you need both. Sometimes you need speech first. Sometimes you need neither as a named package, because the child cannot hear, cannot sleep, or is terrified. This page is how to choose. The plain explainer of what ABA is sits at what is ABA therapy. The speech side starts at speech therapy.
What each one is for
- Speech and language therapy is for understanding and talking: late words, unclear speech, stammering, a child who understands but will not speak, a child with no way to ask. The adult in the room is a speech and language therapist. Ours is Mahnoor Baloch, faculty, Speech & Language Therapist.
- ABA / behaviour therapy is for teaching skills in small steps and changing the situations that make a difficult behaviour more likely: waiting, sitting to a table, asking instead of grabbing, getting through a morning. The adult is a behaviour therapist. Hours here sit with the faculty team under the owner’s plan. We do not print BCBA on a page we have not earned.
If the child has no words and no other way to request, a behaviour programme that does not teach communication is just compliance. If the child has words and still cannot stay in a room long enough to use them, speech sessions will look like “he doesn’t try.” The order matters.
A decision you can make this week
Start with hearing, always. Glue ear and a missed hearing loss impersonate both “not listening” and “not talking.” See glue ear and speech before anyone sells you twenty ABA hours.
Lead with speech and language if the main sentence in your head is:
- he is two or three and has few or no words
- we understand him, nobody else does
- he talks, but he cannot tell a story or answer why
- he stammers, or he has a lisp, or one sound will not come
- he talks at home and goes silent at school — closer to selective mutism than to ABA
Lead with behaviour support if the main sentence is:
- we cannot get through a shop, a meal, or leaving the house
- he has a way to ask and still hits, bolts, or shuts down when a demand starts
- sitting for two minutes of any teaching is impossible
- the skill is there in a quiet room and gone in real life
You probably need both, in one plan, if the child is autistic, not yet asking, and the day is organised around preventing explosions. Communication is the behaviour intervention. That is not a slogan. A child who can say or hand over “stop” has less reason to use their body. Read helping a non-verbal child communicate and autism support.
What “40 hours of ABA” is doing in the conversation
US clinic marketing still quotes intensive early ABA as a large weekly number. That figure does not travel cleanly to a Multan family with one income, a helper, and a two-to-six afternoon clinic. More hours are not automatically more progress. Hours without a parent in the loop often vanish at home.
Ask any centre, including us:
- What will my child be able to do in twelve weeks that they cannot do now?
- Who is in the room, and what are they actually qualified to do?
- Do I stay, or am I asked to wait outside?
- How will you teach a request in the first fortnight?
- What happens if my child is distressed for most of the session?
If the answer to communication is “later, after sitting still,” be careful. Sitting still is not a language. Our own rules for behaviour work are on the ABA explainer: no punishment, no “quiet hands” as a trophy, no goals about looking less autistic.
What we run in Model Town
Inclusive Developmental and Therapy Center offers speech and language therapy, behaviour support, special education, school readiness, parent coaching and child psychology. We do not sell a branded 40-hour ABA package. We do not pretend a speech therapist is a physiotherapist. We do not start a behaviour plan before we have asked about hearing.
The owner, Muhammad Salman Afzal, is a clinical and child psychologist — contact him first. Faculty includes Mahnoor Baloch (speech and language, behaviour, special education) and Noor Fatima (ABA therapist). A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes. You leave with a recommended order, not a menu of add-ons.
If you want the comparison with motor work, that is physio or occupational therapy. If you want to know how we choose a centre at all, that is how to choose a child therapy centre in Multan.
Frequently asked questions
Does my autistic child need ABA or speech therapy?
Often both, in a sensible order. If they have no way to ask, communication comes first — pictures, signs, words, a device. If they can ask and still cannot stay with a task or get through a shop, behaviour support may need to lead. A centre that sells only hours, without that order, is selling a timetable.
Can we do ABA without speech therapy?
You can, and it is a mistake if the child is not yet communicating. A behaviour plan that does not teach a request is teaching the child to be easier to manage. That is not the same as helping them. We will not run it that way.
My child only has a speech delay. Do they need ABA?
Usually no. Unclear speech, late words, a lisp or a stammer are speech and language work. ABA is not a clearer way to say R. If sitting and attending are so hard that no teaching can happen, we look at behaviour and at attention — and we still check hearing first.
How many ABA hours does my child need?
There is no honest number that fits every child. US clinic figures do not copy-paste onto a Multan week. We would rather set two or three skills you will see at home, and a session rhythm you can keep, than quote a number that sounds intensive. Progress you cannot fund or attend is not a plan.
Do you have a BCBA on staff?
No, and we do not print that credential. Behaviour hours sit with the faculty team under the owner’s plan. Noor Fatima works as an ABA therapist. If a family needs a board-certified supervisor, we will say so rather than stretch a title.
Which should we book first at your centre?
Book a consultation (Rs 1,500, up to 50 minutes) and tell us the sentence that is actually running your week. We will recommend speech, behaviour, both, or a doctor — and we will tell you if the next step is a hearing test rather than any of those.
