A letter you can send the class teacher this week
Most school meetings go wrong because nobody wrote anything down. Copy this, put your child’s name in, delete what does not fit, and send it. Then try the changes for ten school days.

Assalam o alaikum / Dear [Teacher’s name], I am writing about [child’s name], in [class]. At home we notice: [e.g. he understands more than he can say / she cannot copy from the board / homework ends in tears]. What already helps: [e.g. sitting near the teacher / one instruction at a time / a two-minute warning before a change]. Could you try, for the next ten school days: 1. Seat [him/her] facing you, away from the door. 2. Give instructions one at a time, and write the steps on the board. 3. Let [him/her] write answers only, rather than copying the whole question. I am not asking for a different curriculum. I am asking for a short trial so we can see what works. I can come in for ten minutes after school this week if that helps. Thank you, [Your name] [Phone]
The list of asks is from classroom support. If the issue is whether they should even be in this school, start with mainstream or special school instead of this letter.
Writing to school — questions parents ask
Should I mention a diagnosis if we have one?
Yes, in one line, after the practical bits. The diagnosis explains why you are writing. The seating and instruction changes are what you want this week. If you do not have a diagnosis, say what you have noticed. You do not need a certificate to ask for a front seat.
What if the school says no?
Ask which two of the five asks they can try. A total no is rare if the list is small. If they want something more formal, what an IEP is and our schools page are the next reading. Government routes sit on the disability certificate guide.
