Handwriting, pencil grip and tired hands
Handwriting is the top floor of a building. Under it sit sitting, shoulders, fingers and eyes. We do not start by asking for more copy. We find the thin floor, then practise that.
Written by the Inclusive Developmental and Therapy Center therapy team — our Speech & Language Therapist, psychology and ABA staff. This page is awaiting its clinical review.
Why copy-practice often fails
A child bracing their whole body to stay in the chair has nothing left for their fingers. A fist grip cannot make small movements. Eyes that lose the line make every letter a search. More homework teaches dread. We wrote the parent version on handwriting help for kids and dysgraphia.
What we practise instead
Sitting without propping. Big arm movements before small ones. Finger strength and moving fingers apart from each other. Then a grasp that lets the pencil move. Then a few letters, stopped while the hand can still succeed. School asks: classroom support — answers only, not copying the whole board.
Left hand, right hand
We do not force a hand. Left-handed handwriting is a setup problem: paper angle, light, a chair that does not bump the neighbour. Forcing a switch is not therapy.
Handwriting — questions parents ask
When is it dysgraphia, not “messy”?
When effort and result stay mismatched on a good day, in a quiet room, with you there. Then read the dysgraphia page rather than buying another copybook.
Will a special pencil fix it?
A thicker pencil or a grip can help a grasp that is almost ready. It will not replace sitting and shoulder control.
They can do it at school and not at 8pm.
The tank is empty. That is the after-school crash, not laziness. See after school.
How do we start?
A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes. Bring a page they wrote last week, not a perfect one.
