Motor and daily skills to try at home

Home motor practice is a button on a spare shirt, playdough on the table, a thick crayon, a sock they pull. If it needs a shop trip and a laminated chart, it will not survive the week.

Dressing, a spoon, a crayon. Ordinary tools. Short bursts.

Three starts that usually work

Playdough: one ball, two snakes, stop. Pegs or large beads. A spare shirt with one big button. Cover the table. Stop while they can still succeed. Checklists: motor skills checklist, fine motor program.

Dressing and mealtimes

One step they do, you do the rest. A sock. A zip started for them. A spoon they hold while you load. If texture is the wall, that is sensory as much as motor — sensory support, feeding program. Do not turn dinner into therapy every night.

When home is not enough

A hand that will not open, a child who cannot sit to eat, pain, or a skill that has gone backwards. Book the motor programme or assessment. We will say if a licensed OT is the right door.

FAQ

At home — questions parents ask

How long should we practise?

Five to ten minutes. A fight that lasts an hour is not practice.

They refuse the pencil at home.

Start with playdough and a fat crayon. The pencil is a later floor. Forcing it teaches avoidance.

Siblings grabbing the only button shirt.

Keep the burst short and the tool theirs for that burst. See supporting siblings.

Can you coach us on video?

Yes, for routines. A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes. Hands-on assessment of the hand is still better in the room.
