Speech therapy for stammering
Stammering therapy is not “take a deep breath and say it again.” It is easier starts, a slower house, and a child who is allowed to finish.
Written by the Inclusive Developmental and Therapy Center therapy team — our Speech & Language Therapist, psychology and ABA staff. This page is awaiting its clinical review.
What we actually change
The pressure around talking: fewer questions in a row, time to finish, adults who model a slightly slower start. Then, if it fits, easy onsets in play. Condition page: stammering. Classroom: stammering in class. Outgrowing: will they outgrow it.
What not to do at home
“Stop, start again.” “Take a breath.” Finishing their sentences. Those usually add pressure. Comment, wait, let them get there.

Stammering — questions parents ask
They only stammer when excited.
That is still stammering. Excitement is a load. We still look at how the house talks.
It started after a new baby / school.
Load can unmask it. We still treat the talking, and we look at the week. A new baby.
Should they avoid talking in class?
No. The teacher can give time and not jump in. See the classroom blog.
How do we start?
A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes. A clip of ordinary chat is more useful than a reading list.
