Independence skills for children

Independence is not a character trait. It is starting, keeping going, and finishing with you in another room. “They can do it if I stand there” is the first stage.

How we fade

Do the job with them. Then point. Then wait. Then leave the room. Teens: packing, money, a road, a phone — school-age life skills.

ADHD and load

Starting is often the wall. Shrink the first step. See Akasha on ADHD and classroom skills and ADHD.

The fade in four moves

Do the job with them. Point. Wait. Leave the room. If you skip to “leave the room” on day one, you usually get a crash and a story about laziness that is not laziness.

ADHD often makes starting the wall. Shrink the first step. Akasha on ADHD, ADHD.

Money, roads, phones

Those come after dressing and a snack are already theirs. Safety skills are taught, not hoped for. Teens: school-age life skills, after school.

FAQ

Independence — questions parents ask

They refuse every chore. Is it laziness?

Often the task is too big. Shrink it. If refusal is the whole day, read homework battles.

When do we add money and roads?

When dressing and a snack are already theirs. Safety skills are taught, not hoped for. See the teen page.

When will they be independent?

A step can move in days. A whole morning takes longer. We will not print a fake date.
