Communication development — beyond first words

Talking is one output. Communication is the whole exchange: looking, pointing, requesting, refusing, repairing a misunderstanding. Mahnoor’s speech training and autism work both sit here. A child with no words still has something to say.

Requesting before conversation

The first job is often a reliable way to ask — a word, a sign, a picture, a device. If asking is slower than crying, a sensible child cries. That is not “behaviour”. That is communication maths. The communication passport is the one-pager for school and relatives.

We still model the spoken word every time. Pictures and signs do not stop talking; they usually increase it, because the child is no longer only in distress. That is the same habit as speech and language therapy.

Joint attention

Looking at what you look at, and checking your face, is the soil words grow in. It is one of the first things she watches in an autistic toddler, and one of the first things she teaches. What joint attention is.

A child who leads you by the hand to the fridge is already communicating. The work is to make that exchange two-way: look, wait, offer a choice, celebrate the attempt. Play, not drills — why play is serious work.

Non-verbal children, and children who talk only at home

No words is not “nothing to work with”. Requesting can start as a look, a reach, a picture or a device. See helping a non-verbal child communicate and the autism plan on autism support.

Words at home and none at school is often both communication and anxiety. Selective mutism, a noisy classroom, or a teacher who has not yet been given a way in can all shut speech down. See selective mutism and shy or anxious.

Language delay versus autism — we do not guess from a list

Late talking has more than one cause. Hearing, DLD, bilingual counting, autism, and ordinary late talking all exist. The fork is speech delay versus autism, settled by assessment, not a Facebook checklist.

Understanding versus speaking is a different split again: receptive vs expressive language. Mahnoor will say which picture she is working from.

FAQ

Communication — questions parents ask

Will using pictures stop my child talking?

No. A reliable way to ask usually increases spoken words, because the child is no longer only in distress. We still model the word every time.

My child has words at home but none at school. Is that communication or behaviour?

Often both. Selective mutism, anxiety and a noisy classroom can all shut speech down. See selective mutism and shy or anxious.

Is this the same as speech therapy?

It sits inside it. Speech therapy also covers sounds, stammering and language structure. This page is the wider exchange — requesting, joint attention, refusing — including for children with no words yet. Speech and language.
