What we can discuss with you
- Situations associated with intense or rapidly changing emotions
- Early signs of becoming overwhelmed and current responses
- Communication, boundaries and what happens after conflict
- Practical goals and any wider assessment or support needs
Starting the conversation
Describe one situation you would like to handle differently, including what you felt, what happened and how long it took to recover. You can discuss what support feels acceptable and whether another person’s involvement would be helpful.
Understanding the scope of support
Emotional dysregulation describes a difficulty, not a diagnosis by itself. It can occur in different circumstances. Persistent low mood, trauma symptoms, possible mood episodes or safety concerns need appropriate assessment rather than being reduced to a lack of self-control.
Read the background guidance: NHS: understanding anger and seeking support. This source explains the topic; it does not certify IDTC or an individual clinician.
