Dyscalculia (Maths Difficulty)

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects how a child understands and works with numbers and maths. It can make the very foundations — a feel for quantity and “number sense”, remembering number facts, and grasping place value — surprisingly hard, even for a child who’s doing well in every other subject. If your child seems bright and capable but numbers just don’t seem to “stick”, dyscalculia may be part of the picture.

It’s worth knowing that dyscalculia is not the same as simply finding maths tricky, having gaps because a topic was missed, or feeling anxious about tests. It’s a genuine difference in how the brain handles number and quantity, and it turns up in otherwise able, intelligent children. It isn’t caused by laziness or by not trying hard enough. In fact, dyscalculic children often work harder at maths than anyone realises.

The encouraging part is that dyscalculia responds well to the right kind of teaching. When maths is taught in a hands-on, visual, step-by-step way and the pressure is eased, children build genuine understanding and real confidence. With patience and support, your child can absolutely make progress and come to feel far more at home with numbers.

Signs of dyscalculia in children

  • They find it hard to tell at a glance which of two numbers is bigger, or to judge “more” and “less”.
  • They keep counting on their fingers or counting from one for simple sums, long after most classmates have stopped.
  • Number facts such as number bonds and times tables just won’t stick, however much they practise.
  • Place value is confusing — the idea that the 2 in 20 means something different from the 2 in 2 doesn’t settle.
  • Telling the time, handling money and giving change feel genuinely hard rather than just unfamiliar.
  • Maths brings real worry or dread, and they may say they “hate maths” or feel they are “stupid” at it.
  • Calculations are slow and effortful, and they may arrive at very different answers to the same sum on different days.
  • They lose track when counting a set of objects, or miss some out and count others twice.
  • Everyday number tasks — estimating, remembering a phone number, or following steps in order — can also be a struggle.

How we help — and what you can do at home

  • A concrete-pictorial-abstract approach helps most: start with real objects your child can touch and move, then pictures, and only then the written numbers and symbols.
  • Use number lines, counters, blocks and other manipulatives so quantity becomes something your child can see and handle rather than just imagine.
  • Little and often is far kinder and more effective than long sessions — short, regular practice lets ideas settle without the overwhelm.
  • Bring maths into real life: cooking and weighing ingredients, handling coins in the shop, sharing out snacks and reading the clock together all build number sense naturally.
  • Ease the timed pressure — speed tests and racing the clock tend to raise anxiety and hide what a child actually understands, so aim for getting there securely rather than quickly.
  • Protect their confidence by praising effort and understanding rather than speed, and by treating mistakes as a normal part of learning.
  • Let your child keep using fingers, number lines or a printed times-table square while they build fluency — these are helpful supports, not cheating.
  • Talk to their teacher or the school special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) so the same approach is used at home and in class.
  • A specialist assessment can confirm dyscalculia and show exactly where your child needs support, which helps everyone aim the help in the right place.

If numbers are a daily worry for your child, please do ask for support — it is never too late to help, and the right, patient teaching can transform how a child feels about maths.

This is a general, made-up example rather than a real child. Picture a nine-year-old who reads well and loves stories but still counts on her fingers for small sums, can’t seem to remember her times tables no matter how much she practises, and gets upset before maths tests. Once dyscalculia is recognised, hands-on lessons using counters and number lines, plenty of real-life maths while cooking and shopping, and the removal of timed pressure slowly turn her dread into growing confidence.

Dyscalculia: questions parents ask

Isn’t my child just bad at maths?

Dyscalculia is different from simply finding maths hard or having missed some teaching. It’s a specific difficulty with the very building blocks of number — quantity, number sense, number facts and place value — that hangs on despite good teaching and real effort. A child who’s behind because a topic was missed will usually catch up once it’s retaught, whereas dyscalculia needs a more hands-on, step-by-step approach.

Is dyscalculia just “dyslexia for numbers”?

They’re separate specific learning difficulties, though they can occur together and share some features. Dyslexia mainly affects reading and spelling through the processing of sounds in words, while dyscalculia affects the understanding of numbers and quantity. A child can have one without the other, and each needs its own kind of support.

Can dyscalculia be helped?

Yes. Teaching that moves from concrete objects to pictures to numbers, uses number lines and manipulatives, and is delivered little and often helps children build genuine understanding. Easing the timed pressure and bringing maths into everyday life make a real difference too. With patient, well-aimed support most children make steady progress and grow far more confident.

Does dyscalculia mean my child has low intelligence?

No. Dyscalculia has nothing to do with overall intelligence and occurs in children who are otherwise able and often doing well in other subjects. The difficulty is specific to numbers and quantity, not to thinking or learning in general.

Should I get my child assessed, and who does that?

If numbers are a persistent struggle and you’re seeing several of the signs, an assessment can be really helpful. It’s usually worth starting with your child’s teacher or the school’s SENCO, who can arrange support and, where appropriate, bring in a specialist teacher or an educational psychologist to confirm dyscalculia and guide the right help.
