Reading can look like magic. One year your child is learning to hold a book the right way up, and a few years later they’re lost inside a story, sounding out words you never taught them. But reading isn’t magic, and it isn’t something children just ‘pick up’ the way they pick up talking. It’s a remarkable skill the human brain was never born to do, built step by careful step on top of the spoken language a child already has. Understanding those steps helps you see where your child is on the journey, and where a bit of extra help might make all the difference.
This guide walks through how reading really develops, why English spelling is so genuinely difficult, and what’s actually going on when a bright, capable child struggles far more than you’d expect. Difficulties like dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia are differences in how the brain handles certain kinds of information, not signs of low intelligence, poor effort or bad parenting. The good news is that we understand these differences better than ever, and there are clear, evidence-based ways to teach and support a child while keeping their confidence and their love of learning intact.
Reading is built on spoken language
Long before a child meets a single letter, the foundations of reading are being laid every time you talk, sing and read aloud together. Spoken language, a rich vocabulary, an ear for how sentences hang together, and the background knowledge that words carry, is the ground reading grows from. A child who has heard thousands of words and stories comes to reading with a huge head start, because reading is ultimately about turning marks on a page back into the language they already understand.
That’s why sharing books with a baby or toddler who can’t yet read is anything but pointless. You’re growing their vocabulary, their curiosity and their sense that print means something. None of it needs flashcards or drills. Conversation, nursery rhymes, storytelling and everyday chatter about the world are the real preparation for literacy, and they cost nothing but your time and attention.
Phonological awareness: hearing the sounds inside words
Before children can link sounds to letters, they first have to notice that spoken words are made of smaller sounds at all. This is called phonological awareness, and it grows through the ear, not the eye. It starts with big chunks, hearing that words rhyme, clapping out the syllables in ‘el-e-phant’, and gradually sharpens down to the smallest units of sound, called phonemes: hearing that ‘cat’ is made of three sounds, /c/ /a/ /t/.
This knack for hearing, separating and playing with individual sounds is one of the strongest predictors of how easily a child will learn to read. It’s also something you can nurture playfully long before school ever starts: rhyming games, silly alliteration, breaking names into beats, and ‘I spy’ with sounds rather than letters. Once a child can hear the sounds inside words, the job of matching those sounds to letters becomes far more manageable.
Phonics, decoding and the climb to fluency
Phonics is where the ear meets the eye: children learn which letters and letter patterns stand for which sounds, and how to blend those sounds together into a word. That process, turning printed letters into spoken words, is called decoding. Good, systematic phonics teaching hands children a reliable way to tackle words they’ve never seen before, instead of guessing from the pictures or memorising whole words by their shape.
At first, decoding is slow and effortful; every word is a little puzzle. With plenty of practice on real, connected text, recognition speeds up and starts to feel automatic. That automatic, effortless word reading is called fluency, and it matters enormously. When a child no longer has to pour all their mental energy into working out each word, that energy is freed for the real point of reading: understanding and enjoying what the words are saying. Fluency is the bridge between decoding and comprehension.
The simple view of reading: two skills, not one
One of the most useful ideas in reading research is the ‘simple view of reading’. It says that reading comprehension is the product of two separate abilities: being able to decode the words on the page, and being able to understand spoken language. Researchers often write it as decoding multiplied by language comprehension, and because it’s multiplication, if either part drops near zero, comprehension collapses, however strong the other part is.
This explains the children who seem so puzzling. Some read a page aloud beautifully yet can’t tell you a thing about what it meant; their decoding is strong but their language comprehension needs support. Others follow any story you read aloud to them yet stumble badly the moment they have to read it themselves; their language is fine and decoding is the barrier, as is often the case in dyslexia. Knowing which side a child is struggling on tells you exactly where to put your effort, rather than just doing ‘more reading’ and hoping.
Why English spelling is genuinely hard
If your child finds spelling confusing, they are not wrong — English really is one of the trickiest writing systems to learn. Unlike languages where each letter reliably makes one sound, English has around 44 sounds spelled in over 250 ways. The same letters make different sounds (“cough”, “though”, “through”), and the same sound is spelled many ways (“to”, “too”, “two”). Much of this is because English borrowed words from many languages and kept their original spellings.
This matters because it means spelling difficulty is often a feature of the language, not a failure of the child. Some patterns simply have to be taught explicitly and practised, rather than reasoned out. It also means struggling to spell does not always signal a deeper difficulty — though persistent, severe trouble with spelling alongside reading can be one sign of dyslexia, which is worth understanding next.
Specific learning difficulties: bright children, different wiring
Some children work far harder than their peers on a specific skill yet make far slower progress. These are called specific learning difficulties, and the key word is specific — the difficulty affects one area while other abilities may be perfectly strong or even exceptional. Dyslexia mainly affects accurate, fluent word reading and spelling, and is linked to differences in processing the sounds in words. Dyscalculia affects the sense of number and learning mathematics — things like comparing quantities, remembering number facts and grasping place value. Dysgraphia affects the physical and organisational act of writing, so handwriting and spelling, along with getting ideas onto the page, can feel disproportionately hard.
Crucially, none of these is caused by low intelligence, laziness or poor teaching, and they are not something a child grows out of by “trying harder”. They are lifelong differences in how the brain handles particular information — and they often sit alongside real strengths in reasoning, creativity or problem-solving. Many successful adults are dyslexic. When a child is bright in conversation but stuck on the page, believing them (rather than assuming they are careless) is the first and most important act of support.
Teaching that works — and protecting self-esteem
For children who struggle, the most effective approach is structured, explicit teaching that is often described as structured literacy or multisensory. It breaks skills into small, logical steps, teaches them directly rather than expecting children to infer them, revisits them until they are secure, and engages several senses at once — seeing, hearing, saying and tracing letters and sounds together. This same careful, systematic approach benefits all learners, but for a struggling child it is essential rather than optional.
Just as important is the child’s sense of themselves as a capable learner. Repeated failure is corrosive; a child who decides “I’m just stupid” will stop trying long before their brain stops being able to learn. Protect self-esteem by separating effort from outcome, praising strategies and persistence, reading aloud to them so they still feast on rich stories they cannot yet decode alone, and getting a proper assessment if worries persist. A child who is struggling does not need to be pushed harder — they need to be taught differently, and to know that you are firmly on their side.
