What we can discuss with you
- Accessible ways to understand information and express choices
- Daily-living routines and skills the person wants to develop
- Support at home and participation in the community
- Working with family or carers while keeping the adult involved
Starting the conversation
Describe what the person already does independently, where help is needed and how they communicate agreement, discomfort or refusal. Reports can provide context, but the appointment should also make room for the adult’s own views and preferred pace.
Understanding the scope of support
Support needs vary widely. Behaviour changes may reflect communication barriers, pain, illness or environmental demands. A support plan should consider those factors; it should not treat every difficulty as a behaviour problem or assume that someone cannot make choices.
Read the background guidance: NICE: learning disabilities and support needs. This source explains the topic; it does not certify IDTC or an individual clinician.
