How to Choose a School Readiness Program

A useful school readiness program should connect your child’s current abilities to the demands of their next classroom. Ask what will be practised, why it matters and how the school will use the plan.

Start with the actual classroom

Ask the school about the daily routine, group size, communication expectations, toileting arrangements and available support. These details help a provider suggest relevant goals. Readiness is broader than knowing letters or writing a name.

Bring examples of what already works: joining a story, asking for help, opening a lunchbox or recovering after a difficult goodbye. A program should build on those strengths rather than judge every child against one entry checklist.

Ask the provider to explain the plan

At Inclusive, the school readiness service is described for ages 3–7. Suitability still needs an individual discussion. Ask how activities will be adapted for language, sensory and developmental needs.

  • Who leads sessions, and what training do they have?
  • Which two or three participation goals will be prioritised?
  • How will parents see progress and know when the plan needs to change?
  • What will the school receive, and who will explain recommendations?

Compare the full commitment and cost

Confirm whether the proposed arrangement is individual or group-based, how often sessions are recommended and what happens if a session is missed. Ask separately about assessment, ongoing sessions, materials and any written report.

The first consultation is Rs 1,500 for up to 50 minutes. An ongoing program is planned and priced separately. Request the proposed frequency and review point before committing; a long package should not substitute for a clear explanation of need.

Look for a practical handover

Ask for recommendations a teacher can use during an ordinary school day. A short description of how your child communicates, what helps during transitions and which supports are needed may be more useful than a long list of general exercises.

No program can guarantee admission, eliminate every difficulty or decide school placement from a webpage. Discuss school options with the family and relevant professionals, then review how the child is actually participating after the transition.

FAQ

Questions about this guide

Does my child need to write their name before starting?

Writing is one possible skill to discuss, not a universal entry requirement. Ask the school and provider which communication, self-care and classroom participation needs are most relevant.

Can a program guarantee mainstream school placement?

No. Placement depends on the child’s needs, the school’s support and admission arrangements. Ask for an honest assessment and a practical transition plan.
