Developmental Milestone Checklists: 2 Years, 3 Years, and What “Therapy Checklist” Means
Written by the Inclusive Developmental and Therapy Center therapy team — our Speech & Language Therapist, psychology and ABA staff. Clinical reviewer for this site: Dr Muhammad Suffyan, MB BS (GMC 8023727) · Updated August 2026; this page has changed since our last clinical review.
A developmental milestone checklist is a list of skills most children have by a certain age — talking, moving, playing, looking after themselves. Parents search it as a therapy milestone checklist, a 3 year old milestones checklist PDF, a printable 3 year old assessment checklist, or what should a 3 year old know academically. Those searches want the same thing: a calm, printable picture of “is this typical,” not a diagnosis from a form.
The printable age sheets — speech, social, movement and self-care, from 6 months to 5 years — are on our milestone checklists page. Tap print or save as PDF. This article is how to read them so one missed item does not become a 2am spiral, and so a real cluster of misses does not get waved away as “every child is different.”
What is a therapy milestone checklist?
In a clinic, a “therapy milestone checklist” is not a school exam. It is a structured look at what your child can do now in the areas therapy might work on: understanding, talking, play, attention, movement, self-care. It tells us where to start, not what your child is worth.
Two different documents get mixed up:
- A developmental checklist — typical skills by age. Ours are free, printable, and not a test. Age checklists.
- A therapy plan — two or three goals written after someone has watched your child. That is not a PDF you download. It is the output of a developmental assessment.
If a centre hands you a 40-item therapy checklist and enrols you before anyone has played with your child, that is a product. Walk away.
Milestones for 2-year-olds — the checklist that matters
By two, most children have a burst of words, join two words (“more milk,” “baba gone”), point to show you things, run, climb, and start pretend. They follow a simple instruction. They look when you call. They are not “academic.” They are social and motor and language.
Use the printable 2 year old milestone checklist. Red-flag companion: red flags at 2. If words are the worry: my 2 year old is not talking.
Missing one item — not yet jumping with two feet, still mixing “me” and “you” — is common. Missing looking, pointing, showing, and words together is a pattern. The pattern is what we assess.
3 year old milestones checklist — including the “academic” search
By three, most children use short sentences a stranger can follow some of the time, play with other children for a stretch, climb, copy a circle, and manage more of dressing. They ask questions. They pretend with a story, not only a single action.
Print: 3 year old development checklist. Red flags: 3 year old milestones red flags. Talking: is it normal for a 3 year old not to talk.
What should a 3 year old know academically? Less than the worksheet industry wants. A typical three-year-old does not need to read, write their name, or sit a preschool exam. They need language, play, a two-step instruction, and enough sitting to share a short activity. Letters as a trophy at three are not a milestone. They are a market. School-readiness, when it is time: school readiness, ready to read.
Self-care milestones
Self-care — feeding with a spoon, a cup, pulling off a sock, starting to help with a toothbrush, a dry day for some three-year-olds — sits on every decent checklist and gets skipped because it is not “academic.” It is how a child lives. Printable sheets include a self-care group at each age on the milestone hub. Daily living work: daily living skills, building independence.
Toilet timing varies widely. Night dryness later than day is typical. Autism and toilet training is a different page: potty training an autistic child.
How to use a checklist without panicking
- Pick the age closest to your child. If they were premature, use corrected age in the first two years.
- Tick what they can do most days, not on their best afternoon.
- Count languages together. A word in Urdu and a word in English are both words. Bilingualism does not cause delay.
- One or two blanks is a watch. A cluster across talking, looking and play is a look.
- Skills that were there and have gone are always a prompt check — not a wait.
A two-minute screen if you want a first pass: developmental check. Speech-only ages: speech and language milestones by age. How talking unfolds: how children learn to talk.
Checklists that are not milestones
- Baby autism checklist / ASD checklist / preschool autism checklist. Those look at social looking, name response, pointing, play — not at whether they know their colours. Start at is my child autistic? a parent checklist, early signs of autism in toddlers, signs of autism in babies. A checklist is not a diagnosis.
- A school entrance test for a three-year-old. That is a school’s marketing, not development.
- A 40-goal therapy spreadsheet. Two or three goals. Review date. Therapy is meant to end.
When a checklist is enough, and when it is not
If the sheet looks like your child, keep playing, keep talking, keep the television off during play. If several items in more than one area are blank, if you are not sleeping for worry, or if anything has gone backwards, a consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes, in Model Town, Multan or online. You do not need a referral or a completed PDF. Bring the ticks if you have them. We will watch the child, not the form.
Under-threes often start in early intervention. Families abroad: online assessment is a first look, complementary to local services. We have no branch in your city.
Frequently asked questions
What is a therapy milestone checklist?
A structured look at what your child can do now in the areas therapy might work on — understanding, talking, play, attention, movement, self-care. It is not a school exam and not a diagnosis. Our free age sheets are developmental checklists. A therapy plan with two or three goals comes after someone has watched your child.
Where can I print a 2 year old or 3 year old milestones checklist PDF?
Open the age page and tap Print / Save as PDF: 2-year checklist and 3-year checklist, plus 6 months through 5 years. They cover speech, social, movement and self-care. They are not an assessment.
What should a 3 year old know academically?
Less than worksheets suggest. A typical three-year-old needs language, play, a two-step instruction and a short sit — not reading, not writing their name, not a preschool exam. Letters as a trophy at three are not a developmental milestone.
My child missed two items. Should I worry?
One or two blanks is common. A cluster across talking, looking and play, or any skill that was there and has gone, is a reason to ask. Tick what they do most days, and count words in every language together.
Is a baby autism checklist the same as a milestone checklist?
No. Milestone sheets ask what most children can do by an age. Autism checklists look at social looking, name response, pointing and play. Neither is a diagnosis. If that is the worry, use the parent autism checklist and get a proper look rather than scoring a form at midnight.
Do you use these checklists in the first appointment?
They are a starting picture. We watch your child. A consultation is Rs 1,500 and lasts up to 50 minutes. You do not need a completed PDF to book.
