Understand the treatment being discussed
Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, can include exposure and response prevention, known as ERP. In a planned treatment, a person gradually encounters triggers while learning not to perform the compulsive response. For children, the plan must account for age, understanding, family involvement and other needs.
This is an explanation of a treatment approach, not an instruction to start exposure exercises at home. Do not use real hazards, humiliation or forced confrontations to test a child’s fear.
Ask the clinician about relevant experience
Before paying for a course of treatment, ask for a clear description of the clinician’s training and experience with children who have OCD. These questions help distinguish a specific treatment plan from a general promise to reduce anxiety.
- What training and supervision do you have in CBT with ERP for children?
- How will you assess OCD and any co-occurring concerns?
- How will my child help choose and understand treatment goals?
- What should caregivers do between sessions, and who can we contact with concerns?
Clarify progress and referral arrangements
Ask what will be measured: time lost to rituals, distress, participation and the child’s own goals. Request a review point and a plan if symptoms worsen or progress is limited. A guarantee of recovery within a fixed number of sessions is not a substitute for this discussion.
Some children need psychiatric input or medication alongside psychological treatment. Medication decisions belong with an appropriately qualified prescriber; caregivers should not start, stop or change treatment based on an online guide.
Confirm what Inclusive can provide
Inclusive can discuss the concern in an initial child psychology consultation for ages 3–16. Confirm the clinician’s OCD and ERP expertise before arranging specialist treatment. This website does not claim that a certified ERP service is available at the centre.
If the appropriate expertise is unavailable or the child’s needs require a different level of care, ask for a suitable referral. An initial consultation fee does not include an unspecified course of ERP.
