It’s natural to feel a little nervous before your child’s first therapy session — and your child may feel it too. The good news: a first session is relaxed, friendly and built entirely around making your child comfortable.

Before you arrive

There’s very little you need to do. It can help to jot down a few notes — when you first noticed your concern, key milestones, and anything a doctor has said. Bringing a favourite toy can also help your child settle.

A warm welcome

We start by helping your child feel at ease. There’s no rush. Often the “assessment” simply looks like play — because that’s when children show us the most.

Getting to know your child

Through gentle play and activities, we observe your child’s communication, attention, movement and skills. We’ll also talk with you, because you know your child best of all. Expect questions about their development, routines and what you’ve noticed.

Talking it through

We’ll share our initial thoughts in plain language — no jargon. If we recommend therapy, we’ll explain what we’d work on and why. If your child needs something we don’t offer, we’ll point you in the right direction.

Leaving with a plan

You won’t leave with more questions than you arrived with. You’ll have a clearer picture of where your child is and a practical next step — often including something simple to try at home straight away.

How to help your child feel positive

  • Keep your own tone light and upbeat — children take cues from you
  • Describe it as going to “play with a friendly teacher”, not a “test”
  • Don’t over-prepare or over-promise; just keep it relaxed

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What happens in a child’s first speech therapy session?

The first session is mostly getting to know your child through play and gentle assessment. The therapist observes how they communicate, listens to your concerns, and starts building rapport. There is no pressure, and your child is free to settle in at their own pace.

Will my child be tested or made to perform on the first visit?

No. The first visit is relaxed and play-based, not an exam. The therapist watches how your child plays, talks and interacts naturally. Many children simply enjoy the toys and games, which gives the therapist the information they need without any pressure.

Should I stay in the room during my child’s first session?

Usually yes, especially with younger children, as your presence helps them feel safe. The therapist will also want to hear from you. Over time, depending on your child, the therapist may suggest stepping back, but this is always discussed with you first.

What should I bring or tell the therapist at the first appointment?

Bring any relevant reports, and be ready to share your child’s history, your main concerns and what you have noticed at home. A favourite toy can help your child relax. The more you share, the better the therapist can plan support for your child.
