The First 90 Days: What Early Progress Looks Like

The first three months of therapy are special. They set the foundation for everything that follows. They are also the time parents watch most anxiously, hoping for signs that things are moving. So here is an honest, reassuring look at what early progress really looks like in the first 90 days, and why the early wins are often quieter than you expect.

Weeks 1 to 4: building trust and a baseline

The first month is mostly about relationship and understanding. Your child is getting to know their therapist and learning that the room is a safe, fun place. We are getting to know your child far more deeply than any single assessment can reveal, watching how they learn, what motivates them, and where they struggle.

The visible progress here is often small: your child arrives more happily, settles faster, or engages a little longer. These quiet wins matter enormously, because a child who feels safe is a child ready to learn.

Weeks 5 to 8: the first real shifts

By the second month, you often start to see genuine movement. A new sound attempted. A word that was not there before. A task tolerated that used to bring tears. The gains are usually specific and small, but they are real, and they tend to show up first in the therapy room before they appear at home.

Why home practice starts to pay off

This is when the few minutes you practise each day begin to compound. Children need many repetitions for a new skill to stick, and most of those happen with you, not us. Families who keep up gentle daily practice usually see the clearest progress in this window.

Weeks 9 to 12: skills start to travel

By the third month, the goal is for skills to begin appearing outside the therapy room: at home, with siblings, perhaps at school. A sound your child could only manage in a quiet session starts slipping into everyday words. This “carry-over” is the true sign that therapy is working, and it is exactly what we are aiming for.

You may also notice changes that are harder to put in a chart but matter just as much. A child who used to give up quickly starts persisting. One who avoided talking begins to try. A frustrated child grows calmer because they can finally make themselves understood. These shifts in confidence often arrive alongside the measurable gains, and for many families they are the most moving signs of all.

An honest word about pace

Every child is different, and progress is never a straight line. Some children leap forward early, then plateau. Others are quiet for weeks, then surge. A flat patch is not failure; it is often the run-up to a leap. Children with conditions such as autism or a global developmental delay may move more gradually, and that is completely expected. We measure each child against their own path, never against another.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What should I expect in the first 90 days of therapy?

The early weeks focus on building trust and understanding your child. We assess strengths and needs, set goals with you and begin gentle, playful sessions. Some changes may appear quickly, while deeper progress builds gradually over these first months.

Is it normal not to see big changes right away?

Yes, very normal. Early on, much of the work is settling your child in, building rapport and laying foundations. Progress often starts small and quiet before becoming more visible. We keep you informed so you understand each stage of the journey.

How can I help during these first months?

Attend sessions consistently, practise the simple activities we share and keep routines calm and encouraging at home. Tell us what you notice. Your involvement in these early weeks helps your child settle and makes the therapy far more effective.

What happens after the first 90 days?

We review how your child has responded, celebrate early wins and update the plan. From there we set the next goals and adjust the schedule as needed. The first 90 days give us a clear foundation to build on with you.
